It sounds like you're on the right track with the module. I had a weird a/c problem last year on my 745li. When the ambient temp would reach about 82 degrees the drivers side ac would begin to get warmer until it eventually went to full heat. The passenger side would stay cold. If I increase the temp request the air would begin to blow colder. After two visits to two different BMW dealers (one of which was in Houston) the problem was not solved. They replaced the control head which has the module integrated into it, We all thought that this was the most likely culprit. When I returned from Houston last June it just so happened that we had a BMW body electronics class scheduled in Charlotte. Our director of training, Tom Eberly to the car with him and asked the instructor what he thought. They could not get it to act up that day but decided to try a drivers side heater valve. I don't work with VW's, but I have BMW experience and suspect their system is similar. For whatever reason the AC control module isn't getting the correct evaporator temperature and is not cycling the compressor. One thing he could have tried is to bump the temp settings up about 5 degrees on both sides and see if it still freezes up; we have had some software issues when the temp is set to the extreme hot or cold that it doesn't regulate correctly.
