Electric Cam-phaser Motor Failure
Auto manufacturers have been under intense pressure and regulations to achieve higher fuel economy levels. This is known as meeting the “CAFE” standards or “Corporate Average Fuel Economy”. Meeting these regulations is very difficult and is being achieved by increasingly more complex internal engine control systems. Canceling out cylinders when not as much power is needed is one way it’s being done. This video shows how one manufacturer is meeting the requirements by using an electrically operated camshaft gear that changes the camshaft timing when the on- board computer commands it.
